Speechwriting: THE BASICS AND BEYOND (G052)

Workshops > Complete List > Speechwriting

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

Are you an “accidental speechwriter” who has been thrust into the role with little or no background or training? If so, this workshop is for you-- whether your job is to write speeches, edit them or occasionally contribute to them.

In a media-saturated world, a speech has to be clear, persuasive and memorable to make an impact on the audience. During this session you’ll learn how to put together an effective speech while making the best of your time and resources. You’ll also watch video clips of speakers on the podium and participate in hands-on exercises and discussions. Plus, your workshop leader Wendy Cherwinski will share insights, anecdotes and lessons learned based on two decades of speechwriting experience for senior executives in government, business and the not-for-profit sector.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In the course of a day you will learn how to:

  • Analyze the audience and determine what they need to hear to get behind the speaker’s ideas
  • Help the speaker connect with listeners
  • Think and act strategically to develop clear messages
  • Develop an opening that makes listeners lean forward in their seats
  • Maintain listener attention and interest through the middle of the speech
  • End on strength so that people leave the room with a clear idea of what the speaker wants them to think, believe or do
  • Write the way people speak
  • Make abstractions concrete
  • Use numbers to reinforce important points
  • Engage and inspire with well-chosen quotes and anecdotes
  • Use transitions and pauses to guide the flow
  • Streamline your work process to meet tight deadlines

What will you take away?

  • a manual filled with checklists, templates, step-by-step instructions, articles and
  • a long list of books, Websites and other useful resources
  • a laminated Speechwriter’s Checklist for ready reference
  • a “beauty makeover” handout that shows common writing errors and how to fix them
